The Autonomous Robotic Telescope is a not-for-profit initiative to inspire young children with science through the wonder of space.

The Autonomous Robotic Telescope is focused on delivering the Earth and Beyond sections of the UK National Curriculum; it is dedicated to helping teachers working outside their area of expertise to deliver inspirational science that integrates both scientific enquiry and ICT into their science lessons.

However the experience of using a telescope can be used to motivate kids in activities right across the curriculum, as was the case with the "I see the Moon" competition which ran in summer 2006 with Setpoint. After using the telescope kids were encouraged to write a poem about the Moon and its phases, bringing creative writing and science together.

The Learningscope interactive web pages are packed with models, animations and games to help your pupils to understand the abstract concepts found in the Earth and Beyond sections of the National Curriculum.

Designed to be used with a cluster of computers, schools.telescope.org helps to promote peer-to-peer learning with its interactive learning environment.

Children are able to learn at their own pace using the interactive models and animations whilst taking part in the star point quiz. This quiz gives instant feedback to learners. Questions are designed to help children to test out their conceptions and to encourage interaction with the web pages.

The quiz is a fully integrated part of the learning process, with the students only allowed to progress to new areas of the site after all the questions have been attempted.

Children can also compete for high scores, as they are able to risk their star points on getting a question right. The more stars you risk, the more stars you win on getting the question right. But, get the question wrong and you lose the stars you risked.

End of topic tests are also available and provide links into related topic areas making them ideal for revision.

Every pupil can work at their own pace using their unique username and password. As your pupils progress through the Learningscope material the site not only remembers where they were last time they logged on, but the answers that they gave to the questions and images they ordered from the telescope. All online assessment is automatically marked for you with monitoring your pupils progress made easy by the teacher interface that gives information about the progress of every child and access to detailed reports of how they are getting on.

Every pupil gets the chance to take part in the inspirational experience of using a real telescope to take images of space. Schools.telescope.org gives you priority access to the Bradford Robotic Telescope, as well as its archive of over 10,000 observations. Using the telescope to collect first hand data helps to integrate more Sc1 into your science lesson.

Pupils can see for themselves the changes in the Moon, the Planets or the motion of the stars through the night sky due to the rotation of the Earth. The Autonomous Robotic Telescope is based in Tenerife in one of the best observatory sites in the world allowing your pupils to see the night sky free from light pollution.
